Top Summer Netflix Recommendations

If you’re a Netflix junkie along with millions of Americans, you probably struggle to find new content to watch on a consistent basis. Firstly, you should be using Netflix’s Taste Profile, on their website, to rate as many movies and TV shows as possible in order to get your money’s worth. This optimizes your streaming experience by allowing for more quality content to appear on your screen rather than being flooded with painfully bad B-rated content. For example, you should obviously have rated Breaking Bad with 5 stars unless you’ve somehow managed to not watch the greatest show in the history of television.

That said, here’s a short list of some moderately unknown/underrated movies available to stream on Netflix:

1. Dead Man Walking (1995)

Based on a true story, Dead Man Walking tells the tale of a death row inmate (Sean Penn) convicted of a brutal crime and a nun (Susan Sarandon) who willfully comforts him in the days leading up to the imminent execution. Sarandon won an Oscar (Best Actress) for her performance in the film.

2. Fargo (1996)

I would hope most reading this have seen or at least heard of Fargo, but this may be a bit of an unknown for younger audiences. Directed by the Coen brothers (Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men), Fargo combines elements of both comedy and drama in a story about a not so clever car salesman plotting a kidnapping of his wife. Francis McDormand took home the Oscar for Best Actress for her role as Marge Grunderson in the film. Due to Fargo‘s success, A TV series of the same name was adapted from the film and aired its first season on FX last year.

3. Jerry Maguire (1996)

Tom Cruise plays the lead role as Jerry Maguire, a NFL agent whose company ousts him after he suddenly recommends unconventional client recruiting strategies. Maguire’s career as an agent relies on the success of his only retained client, Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.).

4. A Simple Plan (1998)

Directed by the diverse Sam Raimi, A Simple Plan tells the story of three ordinary men who happen upon a bag filled with millions of dollars in cash in the wintry woods of Minnesota. They quickly realize that keeping the money isn’t as easy as they had hoped.

5. Three Kings (1999)

Unlike David O. Russell’s recent movies (The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle), Three Kings has a much different feel to it. The film focuses on the Persian Gulf War with undertones of both satirical and political elements. An oddball cast comprised of George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and Ice Cube makes for an interesting film about a group of American soldiers plotting to steal Kuwaiti gold.

6. In Bruges (2008)

Two Irish hitmen (Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson) hideout in a bed and breakfast in the Belgian city of Bruges in this dialogue-driven, dark comedy.

7. Extract (2009)

From the creator of TV series such as Beavis and Butt-Head, King of the Hill, and HBO’s new hit show Silicon Valley, comes Mike Judge’s Extract. The film stars Jason Bateman in the lead role and features an all around awesome cast with the likes of Mila Kunis, Ben Affleck, Kristen Wiig, and J.K. Simmons. Like much of Judge’s work, Extract takes a mundane setting and makes it quite funny with its dialogue and situational humor. This isn’t your typical lame and overdone Adam Sandler-ish 12 year-old humor. If you enjoyed Judge’s 90’s comedy classic Office Space, you should enjoy Extract as well.

8. Mr. Nobody (2009)

Mr. Nobody, a fantasy story taking place in the year 2092, stars one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood, Jared Leto (Requiem for a Dream, Panic Room, Lord of War, Dallas Buyers Club). In addition to a successful acting career in a wide variety of popular movies, Leto has an extensive music career as the lead singer of the band 30 Seconds to Mars. Last year, Leto won an Oscar (Best Supporting Actor) for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club.

9. Short Term 12 (2013)

Short Term 12 injects strong emotions into the hearts of those who strive to help the less fortunate. The film stars Brie Larson (Sleepover, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, 21 Jump Street) and John Gallagher Jr (Pieces of April, Jonah Hex), whose unpretentious and artless acting captures the very emotions of their characters. Short Term 12 is a film that bottles up the cliché “there’s always someone who has it worse than you,” crushes the glass and forces you to swallow every last word. Need a new perspective? Need a wake up call? Add Short Term 12 to your list. Experience what it means to truly appreciate the good in your life.

10. Chef (2014)

Chef features another highly underrated actor in Jon Favreau. In addition to starring in the lead role as a chef who looks to revive his career and repair his family relationships, Favreau also wrote, produced, and directed the film. This is the same guy who was projectile-vomited on in I Love You, Man, the same guy who wrote and directed the fan favorite Christmas comedy, Elf, and the same guy who directed Iron Man. That’s quite the resume and only a small portion of Favreau’s successful career in Hollywood.
